Helt siden jeg fikk giret ned akslingene mine har jeg vært plaget med vibrasjon og ulyd fra fremre mellomaksling når farten passerer ca 50 km/t. Normalt ikke noe stort problem siden man sjelden cruiser rundt med firehjulstrekken inne i stor fart, og har man automatisk frihjulsnav som funker som de skal, vil jo denne akslingen stå stille når man setter spaken i 2H. Mitt mellomakslingsproblem kom når jeg gjorde (vel.. fikk gjort, i dette tilfellet, faktisk) to ting på en gang. Giret ned akslingene fra 4,625:1 til 5,42:1 for å matche 37" dekk, samt at jeg byttet navene til manuelle AVM pga trøbbel med de automatiske (ville ikke koble ut). I tilfeller der jeg ville ha mulighet for å kjøre med firehjulstrekk, ble derfor framakslingen koblet inn manuelt, og ting går dermed rundt uavhenging av om transferkassen står i 2 eller 4. Med nedgiringen av akslingene går mellomakslinger betydelig fortere rundt enn før nedgiring. Samtidig står bilen foreløpig på 35” dekk som øker farten på drivverket ytterligere. Ved måling av vinklene på leddene (fremre mellomaksling, ja) finner jeg at pinjongen peker opp 5 grader, samt at utgående på transfer framover også peker opp - med 7 grader! Mellomakslingen må altså utligne 12 grader, og dette er så langt fra en “z” man kan komme. Ikke spesielt imponert over Mannell Motors i Australia som solgte meg hevesettet, som påstod at vinklene med nye radiusarmer “is definitely not a problem”. Bullshit!

Men! Nå er alt så meget bedre, som det heter. Nød lærer rystet offroader å spinne? I alle fall tok jeg turen innom Tom Wood når jeg var i området. Fant frem til riktig adresse, og gikk inn døren til verkstedet. Slo av en prat med en ung fyr som ble med meg ut for å kikke, men som fort konkluderte med at dette måtte nok Tom se på. “Visitor from Norway???”, en svær kar kom travende ut og tok meg i hånden. Problemer med en mellomaksling? “Not a problem! We’ll take care of you!”. Jeg hadde vel egentlig ventet meg et slags bilverksted med litt ekstra utstyr for å ordne akslinger, men dette verkstedet viste seg å kun være tilrettelagt for produksjon og overhaling av akslinger. Tom fortalte at de sjelden eller aldri så bilene de skulle sitte på. Jeg ble bedt om å kjøre Patrolen rundt på baksiden der han dro opp garasjeporten til lageret og ryddet litt plass. Betingelsen var at jeg måtte skru ut akslingen selv. Han skulle til og med gi meg en god pris om han fikk ta litt bilder og legge inn målene i databasen. Patrol trodde han ikke at de hadde der fra før. Så da var det å rope på “guttungen” Shaun, som viste seg å være sønnen, som da skulle ta bilder, samt lage meg en ny mellomaksling med dobbeltledd!

Shaun inspiserer Patrol-mellomaksling

Etter å ha målt opp riktig avstand og funnet en flens som passet (tror det var fra en Discovery 2, med oppborrede hull til 12 mm bolter), ble det kuttet, sveiset og balansert etter alle kunstens regler. Utrolig fasinerende å se så flinke folk lage ting! Man begynner enkelt og greit med å kutte et rør i passe lengde. Deretter sveises det på en ende med splein og en ende med dobbeltledd. Før sveising måles det selvfølgelig at akslingen er helt rett (kan godta et par tusendels tommer avvik her), og etter sveising justerer man de siste tusendelene med varme (blåselampe).

Jeg må vel si meg relativt fornøyd med dagen, og større uttelling for å bare dukke opp på døra en dag, tror jeg skal bli vanskelig å få til. Å få bruke lageret som garasje, god hjelp, ny skreddersydd mellomaksling, samt å få være med på og få forklart hele prosessen, var rett og slett utrolig spennende og hyggelig. Og attpåtil fikk jeg en god pris siden de kunne bruke Patrolen som mal. Tror rett og slett ikke jeg kan få anbefalt disse gutta nok! Ring og bestill!!

Hey!

Fremdeles ute og kjører, men det har vært litt smått med action her siste uken(e). Fra Tom Wood’s kjørte jeg nordover mot nasjonalparkene Teton og Yellowstone. La veien innom Bear Lake og campet der en natt. Fint område, og det ser ut til å være rikelig med vannsportaktiviteter, men alt var stengt... Er rett og slett en måneds tid for tidlig ute. Var mutters alene på campingplassen, og vannkranene ute på RV plassene stod og rant for å hindre frostsprengte rør. Kvikksølvet krøp under nullen på natta.

Litt småensomt på campingplassene i disse tider...

Teton er egentlig en ganske liten park, og her var alle camp sites stengt. En mulighet var om man parkerte bilen og campet ute i terrenget, men slo dette fra meg etter å ha gått tur et par kilometer opp fra parkeringsplassen. Lå en del snø igjen som var pill råtten, samt endel felter uten snø. Ikke spesielt godt hverken på ski eller på beina. På ranger-stasjonen i området mente de også at bjørnene kunne være litt gretne de første par ukene etter at de våknet etter dvalen... Lot det derfor være og kjørte videre til Yellowstone (større park) i håp om at det var flere åpne camper der.

Og det var var det forsåvidt. En tredjedels camp var åpen i “primitiv” status, som betyr at alt unntatt utedoene er stengt. Booket meg inn, og samme kvelden kom det inn en heftig snøstorm. Dagen etter var omtrent alle veiene inne i parken stengt, og jeg satt i bilen og så film og leste bok. Regnet med at de etterhvert fikk ryddet veiene, så jeg booket inn en natt til. Skrudde ned vareveggen disse nettene og sov inne i bilen. Takteltet har en tendens til å bråke litt når vinden tar seg skikkelig opp. Ikke helt optimal ytterduk på disse teltene, synes jeg, da de er umulig å stramme skikkelig opp. Blir litt mye blafring.

Et par dager senere krysset jeg grensen til Canada. Ingen issues på grensen, og ferden gikk relativt direkte til Calgary. Malin, kjæreste og turkammeraqt for resten av turen, var ventet inn to dager senere. Vasket og ryddet bil, shoppet litt stasj, og veeeeentet. Flyet var i rute, og vi hadde to dager på hotell med swimming pool. Litt godt det også, men nå er vi igjen tilbake til camplivet. Har akkurat kjørt inn i Banff National Park, og regner med å tilbringe litt tid her før vi setter kursen videre mot nord. Kan se ut som det er litt lengre mellom internettstedene opp igjennom Canada, men det får vi ta som det kommer.

Sorry, folkens!
Har ligget litt "værfast" i Whitehorse siste uken. Har hatt noen administrative problemer. Ble slik at jeg tenkte det var best å vente med skriverier til jeg hadde fått ryddet litt. Lover å oppdatere dere med et reisebrev en av de aller første dagene. Er på farta igjen nå, og kjørte 500 km fra Whitehorse idag. Slo akkurat camp i Beaver Creek noen kilometer fra grensen til Alaska. Regner med å dra en 700 km i morgen til Anchorage.

Hei igjen, folkens!

Da var vi på nett igjen. Beklager at det har tatt litt tid. Som jeg nevnte har vi hatt en liten administrativ stopp som varte i nesten to uker, pluss at ting har tatt litt mer tid på tampen for å få alt i orden. Ikke alt gikk helt som vi hadde tenkt, og da vi rett og slett ble nødt til å tøye det lokale regelverket litt, ville vi egentlig ikke gå i detalj på situasjonen. Heldigvis har vi fått orden på alt til slutt, men det er utrolig frustrerende å måtte bruke så mye tid på kontorarbeid når man er “på ferie”.

Det hele startet på en måte hjemme i Norge da bilen skulle sendes til USA. Jeg kjøpte en bilforsikring fra et stort selskap i norge som skulle dekke meg i både USA og Canada. Betingelsen var at jeg flyttet alle mine forsikringer til dette selskapet, og at premien måtte betales på forskudd. No problem! Alt ble ordnet og jeg skulle få alle detaljer på mail. ...som ikke kom... Like før jeg satte meg på flyet for å reise over, ringte jeg inn for å høre om alt var i orden, og etter å ha forklart situasjonen fikk jeg bekreftet at alt så greit ut. Og siden jeg ikke hadde forsikringsbevis på engelsk, kunne evt amerikanske tollmyndigheter “bare ringe” om det skulle bli noen spørsmål. Bilen gikk igjennom tollen uten diskusjon om forsikring (har i ettertid fått høre at bilforsikring ikke er lovpålagt i mange av statene i USA), og som dere har fått med dere, kjørte jeg omtrent 5000 km den neste måneden. I løpet av denne tiden sendte jeg et par mail for å prøve å få klarhet i status hos nevnte forsikringsselskap, og etter endel tid fikk jeg mail tilbake om at de ikke kunne se at jeg hadde noe annet enn en helt vanlig “norsk” kasko forsikring. Jeg ble selvfølgelig ikke spesielt imponert over å høre dette, så jeg ba de pent om å rydde opp, noe som etterhvert viste seg å ikke la seg gjennomføre?!?!?

Jeg var fremdeles på vei nordover, og rett i forkant av dette krysset jeg grensen til Canada, der bilforsikring er obligatorisk, og en utenlandsk bil som kjører uten kan fort riskikere å bli “impounded”, og dermed måtte importeres (!) for registrering før den slippes løs. Dette kunne i værste fall kostet meg bilen, da Y61 ikke er godkjente og kan importeres til Canada (eller USA). På grensen slapp de meg inn da jeg forklarte at SELVFØLGELIG har jeg forsikring! Slapp å vise papirer så de trodde vel på meg. Forstod egentlig ikke hvor alvorlig situasjonen var før jeg begynte arbeidet med en midlertidig forsikring i Canada og begynte å skjønne hvordan systemet her fungerer. Ble nødt til å kjøpe midlertidig forsikring mens jeg ventet på tilbud fra noen europeiske selskaper (som spesialiserer seg på turbiler og ekspedisjoner) da dette rett og slett er en tidkrevende affere. Og jeg grøsser virkelig ved tanken på hva som kunne skjedd om jeg hadde krasjet og skadet noen på turen gjennom USA.

Men! Alt ordner seg til slutt. Har nå alle forsikringer i boks for USA og Canada, og klarsignal om å få forsikring helt frem til Ushuaia i Argentina. Har ikke helt tenkt å la IF slippe unna sånn helt uten videre, men vil understreke at jeg ikke er sur på vedkommende som i første omgang solgte meg forsikringen. I motsetning til andre norske selskap så gadd hun i hvert fall å prøve, og jeg regner vel egentlig med at det var “fagavdelingen” som ikke hadde gjort hjemeleksen om bilforsikring i nordamerika. Hadde bare vært så mye enklere for meg om de hadde inrømmet dette mens jeg fremdeles var hjemme i Norge og forberedte tur, slik at jeg kunne ha sluppet dette tullet tre-fjerdedeler over kontinentet og med svært begrenset internett og telefon...

Vel vel... Grunnen til at jeg har vært litt stille av meg i det siste er altså, kort fortalt, at vi var litt på kanten av regelverket for en stakket stund. Som dere skjønner er vi på veien igjen, og nå ivrigere enn noen gang! Krysset grensen til Alaska, og satte kursen til Anchorage. Måtte jo nesten ta en tur for å se hvordan bygda så ut. Har fått tatt litt bilder og slikt.. Poster umiddelbart!
